Navigator: Stage One

Requirements met:

  • Locate yourself on a simple map. You could use a map of a local park, nature reserve, zoo, or even a theme park.
  • Identify a number of features or locations on that map. You could pinpoint locations like the toilets, car park, bird hide or picnic area.
  • Learn the four cardinal points of a compass.
  • Draw a simple map of where you live, your meeting place or another area local to you.
  • Use a map during an outdoor activity.
  • Show you understand how to dress appropriately and what equipment you and the adults will need on the activity.

Beavers visit Kent Life and use maps to explore the park. This is a self-guided activity, run by your own leaders, using the Navigator 1 Activity pack.

Prices: £5.00 admission per child. Activity pack free. Must be pre-booked and is subject to availability.
Duration: 2.5 hours

Animal Friend Activity Badge

Requirements met:

  • Learn how to care for an animal
  • Tell others in your Colony or Lodge about the animal
  • Find out what the animal needs. Learn about its food, habitat, space, exercise and sleeping area

Beavers visit Kent Life to learn about our animals. They can either do a self-guided visit with a free Cuddle Corner session where they meet some of our small animals, such as rabbits, guinea pigs or chickens. Or they can enjoy a 45-minute Meet the Animals workshop (extra charge, must be pre-booked) where one of the Kent Life Entertainers shows the Beavers a number of our larger animals, such as the pigs, the sheep, the goats etc. and tells them what they eat, how they live etc.

Prices: £5.00 admission per child, plus optional £2 per child for Meet the Animals workshop. Must be pre-booked and subject to availability.
Capacity: Maximum 15 children per session.

My Skills Challenge Badge

Requirements met:

  • Go somewhere new and find out 5 facts about it

Beavers visit Kent Life and explore the farm, the gardens, the historic houses, the Oast house and the play area. Back at the scout hut, they can make a collage, scrapbook, play or log chew about it to show the parents and the rest of the Scout group what they have found out about each of the areas.

My World Challenge Badge

Requirements met:

  • Take part in three activities that reflect England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales, or your part of the UK

Bring your Beavers to Kent Life at our yearly May Day, Hop or Apple festivals to take part in traditional activities that are particular to Kent or England. On May Day, Beavers are invited to take part in our May Queen competition, do Maypole dancing and play traditional games. At the Hop Festival, Beavers can help with the hop harvest and pick hops like children used to do in the previous century. They can see the hops being dried in our Oast House and pressed into pockets. At the Apple Festival, Beavers can find out all about our favourite fruit, learn how they grow, taste different varieties, see them pressed into juice the traditional way and play traditional games. My World Challenge Badge - Minibeasts

Requirements met:

  • Minibeast hunting

Beavers visit Kent Life and learn all about the minibeasts that inhabit our gardens. They have the opportunity to study some minibeasts up close in a safe way. They will undertake a bioblitz to see what is living in our herb garden. They then make a minibeast house to take home.

Prices: £5.00 admission per child, plus £1.75 per child for Beavers – Minibeast workshop. Must be pre-booked and subject to availability.
Capacity: Maximum 30 children per session.

My Outdoors Challenge Badge

Requirements met:

  • Take part in an activity using natural things like leaves, bark, twigs, sand or rocks
  • Point out and name five different types of animal, insect, bird or fish that you might find near where you live. Find out about the food they eat and the places they might live
  • Make something to help animals in the wild. It could be a bird box or a bug hotel

Beavers visit Kent Life and explore our gardens, orchards and nature trail. We will look for 5 different wild animals, insects and birds that live at Kent Life and find out what they eat and how they live. Beavers will make nature art to take home. Depending on the season this could be a weaving with found natural materials, animals made from found natural materials, or stick art. Beavers will also make a minibeast house to take home.

Prices: £5.00 admission per child, plus £95 for Beavers – Outdoors Challenge workshop. Must be pre-booked and subject to availability.
